Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family, it was taken care of by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. As a young girl, Ford was battling anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by word associations. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy and became part of her repertoire in the year 1996.
